Dr. Werner Hanak

Deputy Director Jewish Museum Frankfurt

Dr. Werner Hanak (born 1969 in Salzburg, Austria) Dr. phil. in theatre, film and media studies, Deputy Director at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt since May 2018. Before moving to Germany he was Chief Curator at the Jewish Museum Vienna from 2011-2018 and curatorial staff member since 1994.  In 2013 curated the permanent exhibition “Our City! Jewish Vienna – Then to Now”. He has curated more than 30 exhibition, amongst others “The University. A Battleground” (2015). His last project for the Jewish Museum Vienna is “Leonard Bernstein. A New Yorker in Vienna” opening in October 2018. 2006 he created the new concept for the Mozart apartment in Vienna, in 2009 for the house of composer Joseph Haydn, 2017 for the Haydn Geburtshaus in Rohrau/Lower Austria. He has been lecturing at the University of Vienna and was a Fulbright Visiting Fellow at Bard Graduate Center in New York City in 2004. In 2011 he published “Die Ausstellung als Drama.
